• Deduction (half): -$707
Income Tax:
• Total income: $60k + $10k - $707 = $69,293
• Standard deduction: -$22,500
• Taxable: $46,793 (12% bracket)
• Marginal tax on $10k: $10,000 × 12% = $1,200

Self-Employment Tax:
• $20,000 × 92.35% = $18,470
• $18,470 × 15.3% = $2,826 SE tax
• Deduct half: -$1,413
Income Tax:
• Total income: $75k + $20k - $1,413 = $93,587

• SS cap: $176,100 - $150k = $26,100 still subject to SS
• SS tax: $26,100 × 12.4% = $3,236
• Medicare: $27,705 × 2.9% = $803
• SE tax: $4,039

• Tax on $30k: $30,000 × 32% = $9,600
Total tax: $13,639 (45% effective!)
Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments
If you expect to owe $1,000+ in taxes from side income, IRS requires quarterly estimated payments.
| Quarter | Period Covered | Due Date |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Jan 1 - Mar 31 | April 15 |
| Q2 | Apr 1 - May 31 | June 15 |
| Q3 | Jun 1 - Aug 31 | September 15 |
| Q4 | Sep 1 - Dec 31 | January 15 (next year) |
How Much to Pay Each Quarter
Example: Expecting $20k side income, $7k tax owed
• Total annual tax: $7,000
• Quarterly payment: $7,000 ÷ 4 = $1,750
Pay $1,750 by April 15, June 15, Sept 15, and Jan 15. Use Form 1040-ES.

💡 Side Income Tax Strategies
1. Track EVERYTHING
Use app (QuickBooks Self-Employed, Stride, Hurdlr) to track mileage and expenses. Every receipt saves you 30-40¢ in taxes!
2. Make Quarterly Payments
Don't wait until April. Set aside 25-30% of side income each month. Pay quarterly to avoid penalties.
3. Max Out SEP-IRA or Solo 401(k)
Contribute up to 20% of SE income to SEP-IRA. Reduces taxable income. $10k profit → $2k SEP = save $740 in taxes.
4. Home Office Deduction
If dedicated space for business, take home office deduction. $5/sq ft simplified method (max $1,500). Easy money!
5. Increase W-4 Withholding
Instead of quarterly payments, increase W-4 Line 4(c) to cover side income tax through paycheck withholding. Simpler!
6. QBI Deduction (20%)
Qualified Business Income deduction: Deduct 20% of SE profit from taxable income. $20k profit → $4k deduction = save $880. Huge!
